Physiotherapy for Movement and Nerve Health

Mina Kavia holds a Postgraduate Masters in Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy from the University of Queensland, Australia, and is registered with the College of Physiotherapists of British Columbia. Her approach specialises in restoring, maintaining, and improving how the body moves — with a particular focus on nerve pain, chronic pain, and conditions that haven't resolved with standard care.

At the Squamish clinic, physiotherapy is delivered as part of an integrative framework alongside acupuncture, IMS dry needling, and Functional Medicine protocols. This means addressing not just the structural problem but the systemic factors — inflammation, nutrition, sleep, stress — that prevent full recovery.

    Manual Therapy and Manipulation

Manual therapy encompasses hands-on techniques that reduce joint restriction, ease muscle tension, and improve circulation to affected tissues. Joint manipulation — a high-speed, small-amplitude thrust to restore motion between two bones — is used selectively where indicated. When performed correctly, manipulation safely restores joint movement, decreases surrounding muscle tone, and reduces pain. The familiar pop or click is simply gas releasing from the joint cavity.

Before any manipulation, Mina conducts specific safety screening questions and assessment tests, explains the technique, and obtains informed consent. Manipulation is not appropriate for patients with osteoporosis, vascular compromise, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, or certain neurological conditions — alternative techniques are used in those cases.

    Exercise Prescription

Recovery from injury or chronic pain requires more than hands-on treatment. Specific exercises rebuild the strength and flexibility lost during injury, correct alignment and movement patterns that contribute to pain, and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

Exercise programmes are tailored to your specific condition, fitness level, and goals. They typically start simple and progress as capacity improves — the aim is to make meaningful functional change, not to add complexity.

    Nerve Pain Rehabilitation

Physiotherapy for nerve pain targets the structural drivers: compressed nerves, restricted movement through neural pathways, and the muscular dysfunction that develops around sensitised nerves over time. Neural mobilisation techniques — exercises that gently glide nerves through their pathways — reduce adhesions and improve nerve movement. Progressive strengthening restores stability and reduces ongoing compression.

This structural work is significantly more effective when paired with Functional Medicine protocols that address the cellular conditions necessary for nerve repair.
